International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, IB, is a 2-year pre-university course, designed to facilitate the mobility of students and to promote international understanding. In Sweden the IB Diploma Programme consists of 3 years of studies, the first year is preparatory. The IB resembles a mixture of the Swedish Naturvetenskapsprogrammet and Samhällsvetenskapsprogrammet. All courses in the IB programme are taught in English, except for the students’ mother tongue.
What happens after the IB Diploma Programme?
The IB Diploma Programme is an international education that is recognized worldwide. It prepares you for university level education, and IB students routinely gain admission in some of the best known colleges and universities in the world. As of 2010 IB students will apply to Swedish universities through the same procedures as students with high school diplomas from foreign countries.
About the programme
the curriculum of the IB Diploma Programme contains six subject groups together with a core made up of three separate parts.
The core
This contains of the Extended essay, Theory of knowledge (TOK) and Creativity, Action, Service (CAS). These subjects are compulsory and are central to the philosophy of the Diploma Programme.
The Extended essay
This group offers the opportunity to investigate a topic of individual interest, and acquaints students with the independent research and writing skills expected at university. The Extended essay is comparable to the Swedish ”Gymnasiearbete”.
The interdisciplinary Theory of knowledge
A course designed to provide coherence by exploring the nature of knowledge across disciplines.
The Creativity, Action, Service programme
Which encourages students to be involved in artistic pursuits, sports and community service work.
Students study six subjects selected from the subject groups, these are:
- Language A1
- Second language (for example French, German, Spanish)
- Individuals and society (for example history, geography, economics and psychology)
- Experimental sciences (for example biology, chemistry and physics)
- Mathematics and computer science
- The arts (for example visual arts or another subject from group 2–5)
Normally three subjects are studied at higher level, HL and the remaining three subjects are studied at a standard level, SL.
Examination
Students take written examinations at the end of the programme, which are marked by external IB examiners. Students also complete assessment tasks in the school, which are either initially marked by teachers and then moderated by external moderators or sent directly to external examiners.
The grades awarded for each course range from 1 to 7. Students can also be awarded up to three additional points for their combined results on Theory of knowledge and the extended essay. Therefore, the highest total that a Diploma Programme student can be awarded is 45 points. The diploma is awarded to students who gain at least 24 points.
All IB students who receive an IB diploma fulfill the general entry requirements for universities and colleges in Sweden.
Depending on the subject combination that IB students choose, they can also fulfill the specific requirements for particular courses and programs. At some IB schools, it is possible to be qualified in all of the sciences.
In addition to their IB points, IB students can also gain 2.5 merit points, and most students receive 1.5 merit points or more
This table shows the conversion of IB credit points to the regular Swedish points:
